| White Coat Roof - "The Best Kept Secret in Philadelphia!"
Smart Energy Solutions can install a new, fully warranted white roof coating on your existing residential or office roof. White roof coating is an extremely cost-effective energy saving measure, and also a very lucrative long term investment.
White Roofing Saves Money!
Reduce Cooling Loads:
White Roof Coating reduces cooling loads by an average 22%, reducing the need for air-conditioning and fans.
Extend the Life of Your Roof:
Our White Roof Coatings extend the life of your roof by at least 10 years, helping to avoid maintenance costs or a much more expensive re-roofing.
The Problem - White Reflects / Black Absorbs A black or dark colored roof absorbs the energy from the sun's rays and becomes extremely hot. On a hot day, a black asphalt roof con reach 195 degrees! Much of this heat can radiate to the inside of the building. A white roof coatings reflect the sun's rays and reduce air-conditioning bills by 22% on average! Asphalt, dark roofed, and dark buildings absorb heat. Rooftop heat can reach over 190 degrees. All of these dark surfaces absorbing and letting off heat in the city cause the urban heat island effect. Summers in the city are typically 5-10 degrees warmer than in the surrounding countryside.
In 1993 there were 118 deaths due to heat; 1995 had 61, and 1999 had 67. To address this, Philadelphia’s first reaction was to hand out free fans and air conditioners to those that qualified. This culminated in 1999 to pass out over 400 ACs and fans. Clearly, this was not energy efficient or even safe. They realized the energy and safety issues, and never did this approach again.
The Solution The goal of the ECA's Cool Homes Program is to reduce indoor air temperatures to comfortable levels without increasing the occupants' energy bills by maximizing passive cooling and ventilation and minimizing mechanical cooling. The treatments start with a white, acrylic elastomeric roof coating. ECA adds insulation, air sealing, and other cooling measures.
Since 2001, over 550 homes in the Philadelphia area have had their roofs coated through the program, and it has in fact shown to reduced both indoor and outdoor temperatures during hot weather.
