With energy prices hitting new highs on almost a daily basis, it's welcome news that the US Department of Energy (DOE) has funded the Energy Coordinating Agency (ECA) to launch a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program. This national program provides cost effective energy savings to home owners through a whole house approach. The program has no income eligibility requirements.

Home energy audits typically range from $400 to $700. The Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program starts with a home energy audit to identify all the energy-related problems in the home and all the opportunities to save energy and money. The auditor must be trained and certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI), a national organization based in New York. The homeowner decides what work will be performed by a qualified contractor, and the auditor inspects the work to provide quality assurance. Once the work is completed the auditor performs a “test-out” inspection.

The energy audit consists of combustion appliance inspection, combustion safety testing, air leakage inspection, blower door testing, carbon monoxide testing, and general home investigation.
