HERS Rating and ENERGY STAR Homes Certification:

As a certified Energy Star/HERS rater, ECA works with Builders in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, helping them to produce energy efficient homes. By assisting in the design process, inspecting during construction, and performing final testing, ECA provides the tools builders need to ensure they provide the comfort and energy efficiency their customers expect.

Homes that earn ENERGY STAR certification must meet guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. ENERGY STAR qualified homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).

ENERGY STAR qualified homes can include a variety of energy-efficient features, such as effective insulation, high performance windows, tight construction, well-sealed ducts, efficient heating and cooling equipment, and ENERGY STAR qualified lighting and appliances.

Example Project:

In early 2006, ECA received a grant from the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority to work with the Philadelphia Housing Authority to institutionalize Energy Star Homes as the energy efficiency standard in its new construction. As a result, over 60 units of new rental housing have been built with enhanced energy features with the goal of attaining Energy Star certification by the end of 2006. For the coming year, ECA has received an Energy Harvest grant that will allow this important work to continue.
